The P Word

Maybe it was ol' uncle Attenborough and The Beeb, maybe it wasn't, but in 2018, plastic became a dirty word. Rather than banging on about our increasing levels of guilt on the rare occasions we do end up using a 5p bag or disposable cup, let's talk about what our city is doing to help the enviro, and the little changes you can make to get on board.

Beauty

Our local skincare heroes Honest do discounts if you take in your empties to be refilled. A lil example; hand-wash is normally £24, but just £19 if you take back the bottle. Another reason to love them. Lush have been flying the green flag for time. Around half of their products can be taken home with no packaging at all, and they give freebie face masks if you take pots back. And we dig that.

Coffee

We’ve banged on about re-usable coffee cups enough at this point, right? Afraid not, pals. An honourable shout goes to coffee shops giving discounts for using a re-usable cup for your daily Joe bothWaylands Yard and 200 Degreesgive 10% off. York's will give you double loyalty stamp joy. Less hipster but even more pocket friendly is Pret's 50p discount, making a filter covfefe just 49p.

Groceries

The Clean Kilo is totes packaging-free. Apparently, around a fifth of your shopping bill goes on packaging. Save that cash, take your own containers and fill 'em with everything from pasta and veg to toiletries and cleaning products. Rather than buying in bulk and spending more than you need, weigh out exactly what you want. Like an environmentally friendly, grown-up pick’n’mix.

Festivals

You know Colmore Food Fest at this point. It's back and this year on July 6-7, Victoria Sq is home to a whopping 35 venues with dishes capped at just £4, so you can munch as many as is humanly possible. What's more, this year they're aiming for zero waste and putting a total ban on plastic drinking straws. Environmentally rad, and super tasty.
