Lisbon is a wonderful, crazy, noisy city - and I've found the perfect calming hideaway to get away from it all at the end of the day. Memmo Alfama, in Lisbon's Alfama district.
Memmo Alfama is located in historic Alfama, with narrow, cobbled streets and close to the cathedral and castle. Turning down the narrow street that the hotel is on – the noises of the city seem to stop. Once inside, the neutral walls and furnishings restore the feeling of calm.
The neutral tones continued in our room, with a canvas fabric used throughout. Small touches, such as the pastéis de nata and bottle of local port made the stay feel particularly special. The artwork on the walls, the and even the laundry bag are all in keeping with the understated but stylish theme throughout Memmo Alfama.
Our room overlooked an amazing view of terracotta roofs, the hotel’s red-tiled pool and the Tagus river. Despite it raining during our stay, the terrace looked impossibly chic and I only wish we had visited in summer to take full advantage of the red infinity pool.
The breakfast area, complete with Smeg fridge, has bookshelves teeming with design and history books, a sophisticated soft lounge area and more great views of the river through floor to ceiling windows.
During our stay we asked for several recommendations on restaurants and places to visit, and the staff were always more than accommodating, with great suggestions on places to eat and the best sights in the area.
Memmo Alfama provides a real hideaway and I can’t recommend it highly enough – for real luxury, but understated chic that is the perfect antidote to the lively city outside.
