YUZZO London is a contemporary womenswear label which aims to express inner emotion with simple and elegant design, established by Chinese born designer Yu Zhou. Yu took a few moments to answer some questions about her inspirations and the latest collection.
What is your definition of style? My definition of style is where fashion reflects the person and the designs become part of them. For this reason at YUZZO London, designs are created with an emphasis on different feelings and experiences, so that each piece melds with the wearer in a joyful celebration of colour and style.
Which are your favourite fabrics to design with? Exquisite, elegant and functional fabric with details attract me a lot. Natural fabrics such as silk and other opulent textiles, which create clean silhouettes. I also use mixed textiles combined with original fabrics and handicraft.
What inspires you when you create collections? Inspirations can from every detail of life and my surroundings. I often pay attention to culture, background and environment. Colour, inner emotions, fragility, feminine elegance combined with a protective masculine edge, as seen in our cocoon coats and clean cuts.
What is the starting point for your designs? My designs always start with a story, a concept or a person.
Do you have a style mantra? In my eyes, beauty comes from invisible defects and imperfection, while the fit and cut of any design can transform a person.
Is travel important to you in terms of inspiring your designs? Yes. My oriental background and British, vintage style influence me all the time. I travel to lots of different countries and get inspiration from these travel experiences.
What are your favourite places to visit? I love natural environments like Switzerland and Santorini, Greece. Also I enjoy visiting countries and cities with history and deep culture like Beijing and Tibet of China, Kyoto of Japan, London, Venice and Rome.
Finally, which are your favourite pieces from the YUZZO AW15 collection? The clean and elegant feminine silhouette dresses in dark blue velvet and white lace details, my multi colour block wool and cashmere coat with elaborate cuts.
